# Fridge Not Cooling? Common Causes and What to Check
Is your refrigerator running but not cooling properly? A fridge that is warm while the freezer is cold—or a fridge that is not cooling at all—can have several possible causes.
Here are some of the most common reasons a refrigerator may stop cooling.
## 1. Dirty Condenser Coils
Condenser coils remove heat from the refrigerator. When they become covered with dust and dirt, the refrigerator may have difficulty releasing heat.
**What to do:**
Unplug the refrigerator and carefully clean the condenser coils if they are accessible. Make sure there is enough space around the refrigerator for proper airflow.
## 2. Evaporator Fan Problem
The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the freezer throughout the refrigerator. If the fan motor is not working, the freezer may still be cold while the refrigerator compartment becomes warm.
A technician can check whether the fan motor is receiving power and operating correctly.
## 3. Defrost System Failure
If the evaporator becomes covered with ice, cold air cannot circulate properly.
Possible causes include:
* Defrost heater failure
* Defrost thermostat or bimetal problem
* Defrost sensor problem
* Control board issue
If you see a large amount of ice or frost on the back wall inside the freezer, the defrost system should be checked.
## 4. Damaged Door Gasket
A refrigerator door gasket that is cracked, loose, or not sealing properly can allow warm air to enter continuously.
Check the gasket around the entire door and make sure the door closes tightly.
## 5. Condenser Fan Not Working
Many refrigerators have a condenser fan near the compressor. If this fan stops working, the refrigerator may overheat and have difficulty cooling.
The fan motor, wiring and control system should be inspected.
## 6. Refrigerant Leak or Sealed-System Problem
If the refrigerator has a refrigerant leak or another sealed-system problem, it may run continuously but still fail to reach the proper temperature.
This type of repair should be performed by a qualified appliance technician with the proper refrigeration equipment.
## 7. Compressor Problem
The compressor is one of the most important components in the refrigeration system. If it is not starting, is overheating, or has an internal problem, the refrigerator may not cool properly.
A technician can test the compressor and the starting components to determine the cause.

If you have checked the temperature settings, door seal and obvious airflow probl
